Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
